What to Do and what to Avoid for neck pain

Neck pain can have many different causes. Most common are: 

Muscle strains: This is one of the most common causes of neck pain. It can be caused by poor posture, overuse of neck muscles, or sleeping in an awkward position.

Whiplash: This occurs when the neck is suddenly jerked back and forth, such as in a car accident.

Cervical Herniated Disc: A herniated disc occurs when the soft material inside the disc pushes out through a tear in the outer layer. This can cause pressure on the nerves in the neck and lead to pain.

Arthritis: This is a degenerative condition that causes the cartilage in the joints of the neck to wear down over time. This can lead to stiffness and pain in the neck.

Pinched Nerve: Tight muscles or misalignment of your cervical spine can compress and pinch the nerves in the neck causing additional tightness and pain.  

When experiencing neck pain, there are certain things you should do and things you should avoid that can help alleviate symptoms and promote healing.

Do's for Neck Pain:

Maintain Good Posture: Practice good posture while sitting, standing, and sleeping to reduce strain on the neck muscles and joints.

Use Ergonomic Support: Ensure that your workspace is ergonomically designed, with proper chair height, desk height, and computer screen position to minimize strain on the neck.

Apply Ice or Heat: Apply ice packs or a cold compress to the affected area for the first 48 to 72 hours to reduce inflammation. Afterward, you can use heat therapy, such as a warm towel or heating pad, to help relax muscles and increase blood circulation.

Gentle Stretching: Perform gentle neck stretches and range-of-motion exercises recommended by a healthcare professional or physical therapist to improve flexibility and relieve muscle tension.

Supportive Pillows and Mattresses: Use a supportive pillow that keeps your neck aligned with your spine while sleeping. Consider using a mattress that provides adequate support for your body.


Avoid when you have Neck Pain:

Avoid Prolonged Inactivity: While rest is important initially, avoid prolonged periods of inactivity, as it may lead to stiffness and muscle weakness. Engage in gentle movement and activities to prevent deconditioning.

Limit Heavy Lifting: Avoid lifting heavy objects or carrying loads that strain the neck and shoulder muscles.

Avoid Poor Posture: Avoid slouching or hunching over, especially for extended periods. Poor posture can exacerbate neck pain and strain the muscles and joints.

Minimize Repetitive Strain: Reduce activities that involve repetitive neck movements or strain, such as prolonged computer or smartphone use without breaks.

Avoid Excessive Phone Usage: Limit the time spent looking down at your phone or tablet, as this can strain the neck muscles and lead to "text neck."
